After the big scandal that broke out a few months ago, a big change has been announced for one of the most important and valued figures. It will take effect this weekend.
While the live-action series made the license known to the general public, One Piece continues to go its own way. The manga’s publication continues at a steady pace and is slowly but surely coming to an end. While a remake is planned soon, the anime continues in parallel. Unfortunately, a scandal has recently broken out that will have a direct impact on the Toei animation series. A character very popular with fans will therefore undergo a necessary change.
A change from episode 1116 of One Piece
While the celebrations for the manga’s 25th anniversary were in full swing, an event spoiled the party. A scandal broke out in Japan when it was revealed that Toru Furuya had an extramarital affair with a fan he had gotten his hands on, and had also pressured her to have an abortion. Accusations that the actor, who voiced Yamcha from Dragon Ball, Seiya and Toru Amuro in Detective Conan, confessed to in the columns of Weekly Bunshun magazine at the end of May. Despite the cult of seiyu, the term for voice actors in Japan, Japanimation professionals immediately took action and asked him to give up his various roles. Among them was that of Sabo in the One Piece anime.
The character, particularly appreciated by manga fans, therefore had to find a new voice that suited the character. After several months of research, Toei found an actor worthy of the name. The official One Piece account revealed on August 18 that it will ultimately be Irin Miyu who will take up the torch of the next appearances of Luffy’s brother in the anime. The person played various key roles, including Haku in Spirited Away, Ritsu in Mob Psycho 100, Koji from Haikyuu and the young version of Minato in the Naruto series. Fans won’t have to wait long to discover his interpretation, as he will voice Sabo from episode 1116, which airs in Japan this weekend. Toei has given a first glimpse, but the revolutionary is nowhere to be seen in this short teaser.
