James Cameron recently revealed the origin of the title of the next installment of Avatar. If the title “Fire and Ashes” refers to the new Na’vi tribe, it is actually more directly linked to the themes of this new film.
The explanation is in the film
During Disney’s D23 conference, the title of the next installment of Avatar was revealed. This new film will be titled “Fire and Ashes” (Fire and Ashes in the original version), a title that directly recalls the new Na’vi tribe that is introduced in this film and that James Cameron has already described it in the past.
For the filmmaker, the title also refers to the themes that we will find in this feature film. Interviewed by Weekly entertainmentJames Cameron revealed more information about the origins of this title.
I don’t want to say too much until you see the film and can understand the meaning, but for us, fire is a symbol of hatred, anger, violence, and things like that. And the ashes are the consequence. What are the consequences? Grief, grief? And then what does that mean for the future? More violence, more anger, more hatred. It’s a vicious circle. So that’s the main idea.
A darker film
With this film, the Avatar saga must take a darker turn than in the past, without plunging into total darkness, the filmmaker explained.
I wouldn’t call Avatar 3 a dark film. I think it touches on some darker themes than the previous ones, but it’s still an open, glorious, grand adventure, which is what we strive for every time. However, we’re not afraid to go into the dark corners of our characters, which is a good thing. That’s also what people really feel when they get to know a character well, whether it’s through a series or elsewhere: They want to know more. They want to learn more about them, find out what their limits are, so to speak. And that’s what we’re going to explore.
More mature and introspective, this new installment should immerse us in the heart of the conflict between the Na’vi and humans by introducing the people of Ash, a tribe that will be ready to shed blood, a “race of warlike and belligerent Na’vi,” “volcanic,” as producer Jon Landau explained. Now we just have to discover this new installment, whose filming has already been completed. For that, see you in the cinema on December 19th next year.
