We are less than ten days away from the release of the video game Emio to Nintendo Switch. A title that since its primer teasercompletely captivated the entire community with the thought of what that terrifying footage that the Japanese company itself was showing could be.

This bet on the part of Nintendo surprised everyone, even more so considering that we are at the end of the generation of Nintendo Switch. However, this binomial: Nintendo-terror, It is something more than usual in the history of the company and today I am here to talk to you a little more about the origins and the legacy that this genre has given so much.

Nintendo and terror, an incredible story

From very early with NESwe find ourselves with an original horror title that, in my personal opinion, is at least worthy of a chance for how surprising it is, and it is none other than the 1986 video game, Chiller which would first arrive in arcade machines and later on the console system in 1990 with the sole objective of mutilating and dismembering any living “creature” that dared to pass through our dungeon; something that surely many people today would not associate with the Nintendo brand.

Where that same year we find another fabulous and mythical proposal of the genre such as A Nightmare On Elm Streetlittle more to add about this popular video game of the system and arcades of the moment, pure nostalgia.

We continue to advance further in our particular “Delorian” where we are already beginning to see represented in Nintendo sagas that laid the foundations for the later most successful titles of the genre such as Alone in the Dark o Clock Tower. I could write for hours about these two titles and their influence but what concerns the case is precisely, once again, the clear commitment of Nintendo having to include these titles in its catalogue and this is something that has never changed, it has always remained unchanged over the years.

The horror sagas and their journey through the Big N

And precisely these titles gave rise to sagas such as Resident Evil and its dazzling appearance in the system of Nintendo Gamecube even with a version ported later in the second installment that we will all remember for the absolute wonders they had to perform from Capcom to be able to introduce this installment into the system. To emphasize and I repeat myself once again, Nintendo’s need and passion to have all the horror gems possible, is not a fad or a social experiment what is happening now.

Over time this was not limited to episodes related to third companies Not at all, but Nintendo also began to develop its own horror titles with sagas from within the house, as is the case of the first Luigi´s Mansion which would set a precedent never seen before to date, demonstrating that the horror genre has no limits for the company and that they can adapt it to any type of interest, audience and gameplay proposal.

And with this in mind they surely decided to face with everything the launch of the platform of Wii U with a title that was not only exclusive in its origins, but that knew how to uniquely take advantage of the console’s features to make it a totally unique and unprecedented experience to date. I’m not talking about any other than the magnificent Zombie U. A video game that through the famous tablet-controllerperfectly combined the zombie and horror genre with the new features and benefits of the Nintendo console, a totally groundbreaking formula for the time.

As you can see, we could go on like this for a long, long time with other more recent proposals that are precisely taking advantage of Nintendo Switch to meet new audiences as is the case with the franchise Project Zero o Fatal Frame. So, do you agree with my initial approach?
