At the end of June, Logitech announced its new gaming keyboard, which I had the opportunity to test in EL ESPAÑOL – El Androide Libre. The Logitech G515 stands out openly for its overall experience and for an important detail: it reduces the height of the keystrokes to 22 mm, being a discreet keyboard.
This device can be purchased in Europe at a price of 165 dollars and in cable version for 109.99 dollars (although this will arrive at the end of the year). It has some aspects to highlight such as its soft touch, the “brown” sound of its keys that makes it silent. It also has fully customizable lighting for the best games and a battery that allows to reach 8 or 9 days of autonomy without having to connect it to the PC’s USB connection with the cable provided in the box.
In my case, Still used to wired Logitech mechanical keyboardsI had doubts about the autonomy, but leaving the RGB lighting configuration as it comes from the factory, I forgot about charging it to leave aside one of my biggest fears; especially because of the habit of not having to carry another device or peripheral (as if we had few).
The logical advantage of being wireless The fact is that you can move it from here to there and you avoid a cable, making the office table clearer and “cleaner”. This experience is not new, but I wanted to describe it in these lines to better understand my point of view on wireless keyboards, because surely there are still many who hesitate to use them.
Come on to use a Logitech mechanical keyboard with its high keys and the “brown” sound, so in these sections I was also a little nervous, especially since the Logitech G515 has keys that are half-height and that activate at a minimum distance of 1.3 mm and a total travel of 3.2 mm. A big change that I got used to faster than I thought: I ended up typing quickly almost after a few minutes.
The posture of the hands is more naturaland here we can forget about having an extra pad to keep the hand raised, as happens with mechanical ones, which means that the wrist is not as suspended as if it were in the air. An experience that benefits our joints in the long run, especially when we spend hours and hours using a keyboard daily.
Offers a subtle cracked which can be quickly enjoyed with just one click. This is due to the PBT keycaps with a subtle feel and high durability. This is another important fact, but it takes time to verify and Logitech keyboards usually last a long time.
It is worth remembering that my previous keyboard, the G610, which I can say I “mistreated” for years, is still there, even if some keys have already had a hard time. That said, there is another detail to take into account for the prolonged use that will be given over time: the The keys are coated with a material that prevents corrosion water and possible traces of oil.
Personalization and lighting
A gaming keyboard needs features to program keys, macros, and lighting effects that match the same colors used in the tower. Manufacturers and Windows 11 have the tools and experience to give any device or gear special lighting, and Logitech delivers this keyboard. with 16.8 million colors available with the G HUB app.
From there you can set up a good animation and effects chainand download the same ones that the community of Logitech gaming keyboard users can create. There are some that have a programmed pattern to create an animation of great harmony and color, others in which pressing any key generates an effect of extension of the color to the rest of the keys.
Each key can be assigned 15 functions in total and from G Hub you can save settings as well as profiles and activities whether it’s for gaming, working or even streaming. This experience is very important to customize any action or macro on any key.
Autonomy
The Logitech G515 gaming keyboard lets us try these very attractive effects, but it involves that autonomy may suffer. If you prefer the convenience of leaving out the cable provided in the box, which is used to recharge the keyboard in two hours, the battery life is more than enough for a week.
With the light effect provided by default, with the W, A, S and D keys marked in a pink tone and the rest in light blue, it consumes, using the keyboard about 10 hours a day, between 8 or 9 days. It’s nice to forget the cable to connect it to the PC and the desktop appears as clear as possible.
If some of its more striking effects are used, such as the color expansion that makes the rest of the keys bathe in color across the entire keyboard with each press (a very cool effect), battery life can suffer a bit, but in general terms, the G515 feels like charged to 100% you can forget the cable connect it to the PC for several days; and coming from wired mechanical keyboards, the truth is that it is appreciated.
Should I buy it?
After several weeks of testing and, of course, being an indispensable tool for work and leisure on a PC equipped with Windows 11 and a powerful NVIDIA RTX 4070 graphics card, for games like GTA Online, Diablo IV or Diablo II Resurrected, the the experience in both aspects is excellent its pleasant size, the appeal of its color effects and its simplicity and operation.
Yes, there is one Logitech G Hub update problem, which in my case blocked access to the keyboard settings for color effects and macros (fortunately I was able to test them a few days before the last update).
Last but not least, what it feels like to type on a low-profile keyboardused to the keys of the Logitech G610 mechanical (which the poor thing lasted a good while with a few dead keys); this is exactly what put me off the most (with a deep connection to what I ancient of the keyboard of the Amstrad CPC 464 or the Atari 520 ST that I had as a computer as a teenager).
And I can only say that the pose of the hand placed on the surface is more natural, the ergonomics of the design makes you type faster and the sound (even the G610 being brown) is very low, so it also produces a harmonious sound when typing frequently (here’s the quick GIF of the kitten typing non-stop). A keyboard that already replaces my long-suffering Logitech G610 and dispels one of the fears I had: replacing a wireless keyboard with a wired one.
