News culture “We have ideas about where the story should go”: Fans of the Alien saga are overjoyed about the release of the Romulus film, the sequel is already planned, but …
“Alien Romulus” has been in cinemas since last week and is a critical and commercial success. Is a sequel planned? Maybe…
A successful return
Launched in 1979 under the auspices of Ridley Scott, the Alien saga is a pillar of science fiction, horror and cinema in general. Since then, numerous installments have been created, directed by directors with different visions – James Cameron, David Fincher and Jean-Pierre Jeunet – before Scott returned to the helm with Prometheus and Alien Covenant. The problem is that the latter did not have the expected success, which led 20th Century Fox to review its vision (and even cancel certain projects). However, the company has since been bought by Disney.
In the end, this realignment will have taken a very good turn since then“Alien Romulus, released last week, looks to be a real success, once again tying in with pure horror and even terror.” We owe this new episode to Fede Alvarez, who already attracted a lot of attention through “Evil Dead” and “Don’t Breathe” and who was also inspired by the video game “Alien Isolation” for his own vision of the saga.
On Allociné, Alien Romulus receives an average rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars from the French press, while viewers give it an average of 3.7 stars. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a good 81% from specialists and 86% from internet users. And most importantly, the film has already exceeded the $100 million mark at the international box office (with a budget of $80 million). And that’s just the beginning.
A sequel is just around the corner
If a film is appreciated and achieves good commercial results, The public has the right to wonder whether a sequel is planned… This is even more true when we talk about a franchise like Alien, whose story is still worth exploring. The question was therefore asked directly to Fede Alvarez by The Hollywood Reporter and here is his answer:
My philosophy is that we should never do a sequel in two years. You have to look elsewhere. The public has to really want it. If you look at Alien and Aliens, there are seven years between them. But we definitely have ideas about where the story should go.
In other words, the director would of course like to take his time if he ever has to direct a new alien (assuming he gets the role), but that hasn’t stopped him and his team from already thinking about a sequel. In any case, In any case, we remember that in 2025 an Alien television series is scheduled to be released, which will be a prequel to the entire series, since it is set on Earth, a few years before the events of Prometheus.
