Even if I have an eBook to read e-books, I forget it in the drawer and I don’t think to charge it either. In the end, I almost always depend on my Android phone for read before bedone of the most enjoyable moments of the day. These years of using Google OS, I have tried several of the best apps for reading books, among which Moon Reader is one of my favorites.

However, I was looking for a different experience and, if possible, free software: I have already replaced “Google Apps” and even the native camera with Open Source alternatives. Well, after some time of searching, I found: this app has everything and what I don’t like – basically ads and payments in the application– has nothing. It has become essential.

Meet Librera, the Open Source App for Book Lovers

Just browse repositories like GitHub to find real gems in the form of Android apps. There are all sorts of them: customization, settings, news, weather, clock, calls, etc. I thought it would be hard for me to find a e-book readerand it certainly was.

However, after discovering “Librera”, I have a new favorite reading app for a long time. Clear and simple interfaceorganization by folders, access to recent books and the ability to mark them as favorites: with these features, I control my book library.

It’s probably not one of the most aesthetic, since it doesn’t follow the Material You guidelines, but it’s at least functional. From its home screen, it gives an overview of the titles stored in my mobile’s memory.

And one of the best utilities is its side menu: it allows filter books by format (pdf, epub, doc and many more, it is compatible with more than 14 file types), and customize its operation in detail. Do I prefer the navigation tabs at the bottom? I can change it.

Of course, and as it could not be otherwise, the reading experience can be modified as we wish: screen orientation, font size, light or dark theme and even the brightness level (you can raise or lower it by entering a book).

As if that weren’t enough, Librera displays the covers of downloaded books in a grid to find them more quickly. And it has a great feature to not lose your library, essential if you’ve been accumulating books for years: sync with Google Drive.

To download it, you have several options: the official repository on GitHub (which also gives access to the ‘Pro’ version without paying), Google Play Store or F-Droid. Although Librera Pro is free when downloaded from its repository, in the Google store you have to pay 5.49 dollars for its ad-free version.
