Many games from the popular Lord of the Rings universe are in the pipeline, and the most ambitious of them is officially making waves again.
In addition to the building/survival game Return to Moria, which is coming in October, and the cute Tales of the Shire, which is expected later in the year, Amazon Games is working on a much more ambitious Lord of the Rings game: an MMO. Christoph Hartmann, CEO, revealed some news on this topic in an interview with IGN.
Amazon Games’ Lord of the Rings MMO looks east
Last year, Amazon Games announced with great fanfare that it was working on an ambitious MMO set in the Lord of the Rings universe, entering the territory of The Lord of the Rings Online, which was released 17 years ago. After New World, the group wants to apply what it has learned in this vast genre to Tolkien’s famous Middle Earth. A huge task that the developers are clearly working on in earnest.
« We don’t want to do what has already been done. Even if it’s tempting for an existing license, it’s useless. You have to find a new approach. I think we’re still in the phase where we’re looking for a good approach that will differentiate our game from others. So it’s too early for our Lord of the Rings MMO
Will this time be the right one?
As a reminder, Amazon Games had already started working on a Lord of the Rings MMO, but finally gave up on it in 2019, considering it ” too complicated
With the team’s experience on New World, this new draft could be promising (and certainly much more technically up to date than The Lord of the Rings Online), but it will require patience to learn more. In the meantime, Prime Video will host the second season of The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power starting August 29. It remains to be seen if it will be more compelling than the first.
