In just a few days, new episodes of one of its most ambitious series will arrive on Amazon Prime Video: The Rings of PowerThe series, inspired by the Lord of the Rings franchise, will return with a second season that will begin by narrating the origins of Sauron, something that many did not understand why he did not appear in the first season.
Through an interview with the American media Screen Rantthe co-showrunner of the series, Patrick McKayexplains that Sauron’s origin story has been written practically since the pandemic. The production company’s intention was to add it in the first season, but for narrative reasons they decided to leave it for the second.
“Yes, at one point we wanted to include some of that material in Season 1, but we felt that the story would benefit even more if we saved it for Season 2. So yes, we knew this backstory, and we’ve always had a plan for the overall, high-level trajectory of the characters and story lines.”
In addition to this, McKay explains that, since the first season began by telling the origin story of Galadriel, they believed that in order to start the second on a good pace, they should do the same, but this time with the origins of the Dark Lord of Middle-earth.
The new episodes of the series produced by Amazon will seek to definitively convince fans of Tolkien’s work who were not entirely satisfied with the first episodes, as well as continue to enamor viewers who are eager to explore more about Middle Earth. The second season of The Rings of Power will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on August 29.
