World of Warcraft: Civil War is officially out today, which means you—yes, you—can boot up the game right now and enjoy this fantastic new expansion. Before the dust settles and you have to raid every week, there’s never been a better time to play an MMO.
The expansion will see you and other players delve deep into the bowels of Azeroth in search of loot, Xal’atath, and about a billion giant spiders, who, ironically, don’t really like you hanging around. The game was already available to players who purchased a special (and more expensive) version of the expansion, but now the gates have been opened for all players to join in.

As for the content available so far, the full leveling experience, exploration, and full sets of dungeons in both Normal and Heroic difficulties are all there. Fast forward to September 10, and the Normal, Heroic, and Raid Finder tiers of raids are released (Raid Finder is initially locked to Wing 1), giving players the first truly difficult content in the expansion.
But ask the most devoted WoW players, September 17th is the date to consider, because that’s when you’ll get mythic dungeons and mythic raids. That’s what all the good players will be working on for the foreseeable future. Everyone else will be busy farming mounts, pet battles, hunting transmogrifications, and begging for mythic nerfs. That’s the way of the world.
Initial reactions seem positive too! Since Shadowlands was basically over, recent expansions have all been pretty good upon release, and like I wrote at the top, this really is one of the best times to get into World of Warcraft expansions. Don’t let all the spiders put you off either, the game has a pretty solid arachnophobia mode.
