The European Evangelist
In the 1980s, Phil Harrison, a talented web and graphic designer, became known for his work in various small studios before being named Chief developer of Mindscape in 1989and thus led the production of cult titles such as Paperboy and Prince of Persia. He quickly rose to great fame, which even led him to work with very big names in the industry such as Will Wright – the creator of SimCity and The Sims opened the doors of Sony for him in 1992, just as the manufacturer was designing the first PlayStation. Suffice it to say that Phil Harrison is shining brighter than ever at this moment, but he cannot yet imagine that events are about to take a much darker turn…
When he arrived at Sony, he held the role of manager during the golden years of the PlayStation. Whether it is the first version of the brand or the PS2, Harrison is extremely committed and is developing the Japanese company’s strategy in Europe as much as possibleuntil he was even dubbed “the European evangelist” by the world press. A title that has not been usurped since then to be one of the first big western names to take on Sony’s gaming arcana. He will then be heavily involved in leading the brand’s internal studios, which will be tasked with giving the PlayStation 3 its biggest exclusives when it launches. Unfortunately, as the journey begins, it is far from the golden age for the PS3. The reason for this is that really important publications only appear a few years later in the life of the machine. Then, in 2008, Phil decided to abandon ship, after 16 years of good and loyal service. The greatest irony is that his departure comes just weeks before the moment when the console finally manages to consolidate its catalog, with titles such as Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, LittleBigPlanet or even PlayStation Home, a project in which Harrison was extremely involved.
