Tomorrow is the day and “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 2 will start streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Three episodes will be released at once, before continuing with one episode each week. Fans can look forward to epic battles, Tolkien references and new characters!
A new character that is already being highlighted in the marketing campaign is Troll Damrod. The new villain is voiced by Gil-galad actor Benjamin Walker and even has his own doom metal anthem from composer Bear McCreary.
The Ballad of Damrod
In order to give the mighty troll a fitting appearance, it was decided to compose a doom metal song, for which composer Bear McCreary was able to win over Jens Kidman from the band Meshuggah and drummer Gene Hoglan (among others: Testament, Dark Angel and Dethklok).
What may surprise some fans about the new villain is that he doesn’t listen to Sauron’s allies. In our exclusive interview with actor Ben Walker, we addressed the troll in the room and got some insight.
Well, I was very flattered that they asked me to voice Damrod. I don’t know, I guess I just give off the energy of an angry troll, but I also think they wanted him to have some depth in the story.
Ben Walker
“We have to be able to tell a lot about who he is just by the way he sounds in that short time,” says the actor, who usually appears in front of the camera as a beaming elf, “And I had some very specific ideas about what he experienced, how he expressed himself, why he joined Adar, and it’s because he really wants to see Sauron dead.”
The last sentence resonates quite a bit. Why does the troll want to kill Sauron? So far we know very little about it, but soon we will surely find out more about what drives the mighty troll with the metal anthem.
Ben Walker jokingly concludes his account of playing the troll: “My troll work is my best work.”
On August 29, 2024, “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 2 will start with three episodes on Prime Video. After that, it will continue with a new episode each week. Work is already underway on “The Rings of Power” Season 3.
