In one Apple campus tourtook the opportunity to talk to Jobs about the challenges he was facing. Howard Schultz was frustrated with the direction his team was taking and was looking for advice. During their meeting, Schultz began to share his concerns with Jobs. In the middle of the conversation, Jobs interrupted him. abruptly and said:
Here’s what you do…go back to Seattle and fire everyone on your management team.
Howard Schultz, shocked by such a drastic recommendation I thought Steve Jobs was joking. However, the intensity with which Jobs told him, even shouting in his face, made it clear that this was not the case.
Steve was right. Within nine months, the majority of his management team had left the company, just as Jobs had predicted.
This radical advice from Jobs demonstrates his philosophy of not tolerating mediocrity in business and act quickly and decisively when I saw a problem. While the suggestion of firing an entire team may seem (and is) extreme, in this case Howard Schultz admitted that Jobs was right.

The suggestion to call for the firing of Starbucks’ entire management team was not an isolated event in the genius’s career. Since returning to Apple in 1997, Jobs carried out a series of layoffs and reorganizations drastic changes to the company, laying off thousands of employees and simplifying the product line to focus on the essentials. This strategy not only saved Apple from bankruptcy, but made it one of the most valuable companies in the world.
Jobs was a strong believer in the importance of having a high-performance team. In a famous statement, he mentioned that his job was to make sure that only “A players” worked with him, because he knew that “B players” tended to hire “C-class C players”, which dilutes the overall quality of the team’s work and the company.
