Most fans agree that Alien: Romulus is a very entertaining film, perhaps even the best film in the sci-fi horror franchise since Alien (1986). Well, that depends on how crazy you personally think the franchise is. Regardless, with both Alien and Predator back on track, 20th Century Fox doesn’t seem to be slowing down and has already started filming the next standalone Predator movie.
We’ve learned that Predator: Wasteland is currently filming in New Zealand via AvP Galaxy, which has done a solid job with Alien and Predator over the years. Directors and writers Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) and Patrick Eisen (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) are back at the helm, so it’s reason to celebrate, as 2022’s Prey is a big success.

However, this time around, Disney plans to release the next Predator movie in theaters after Prey received extremely high reviews and satisfied most fans. Disney knows they blew it by putting the movie on Hulu/Disney Plus, and looking at what Alien: Romulus did on an $80 million budget, there’s a good chance a pretty good Predator movie will be released in theaters.
Earlier this summer, we learned that Elle Fanning would be starring in Bad Waters, but details about her character were kept under wraps. Now, the folks over at AvP Galaxy have unearthed a vague but intriguing synopsis: “A groundbreaking film in which one of two main storylines delves into the complex relationship between two very different sisters whose family bonds are put to the ultimate test as they pursue their different paths and missions.”
The main characters are twin sisters, both of whom seem to be played by Fanning. One is innocent and fearless, while the other is more “belligerent” and fierce. The actual plot and setting remain a mystery, but we already know that the story takes place in the near future. If we combine this with the title “Badlands”, perhaps we can infer that climate change is of some importance to the plot. In fact, global warming can easily be linked to the mythology of the Predator, as this species prefers warmer environments.
Regardless, we’ll likely get more official details and casting news in the coming months, as the film is expected to wrap up this fall. That could mean a release date of late 2025 or spring/summer 2026, depending on how quickly Disney and 20th Century Fox want to move the film forward.
