After PSN and various video streaming services, Steam is now working to reduce bandwidth usage during the corona crisis.

At least the German Internet providers repeatedly emphasize that they have the additional burdens of home offices and the increased use of video streaming and games under control, but the services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube, PSN and now Steam are working on it themselves, reduce the load as much as possible.

Steam is now making profound changes in download prioritization, especially when it comes to game updates. For the time being, only games that have been actively played in the last three days will be updated automatically. Less used games are now automatically updated outside of peak times, as before, but are now distributed over a period of several days. When starting a game or via Download Manager, updates can still be carried out immediately.

Steam wants to continue working on additional solutions and is also giving some tips that everyone can use to reduce the workload, for example by setting auto-update periods, limiting the bandwidth for Steam on the home computer, disabling auto-updates for installed games that are not currently or in the foreseeable future, or to outsource games to an external disk instead of deleting and downloading them again.
