In “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 2, Halbrand suddenly becomes a blond elf à la Legolas. But what is already known about Sauron’s new form Annatar?

Halbrand finally reveals himself as Sauron in the final 10th episode of “The Rings of Power”. And in the first three episodes of the second season of “The Lord of the Rings” series, we see the dark ruler in a new form. But what is Sauron’s new look all about? We took a look at Tolkien’s works.

As Half-Rand, he already hinted at his transformation in season 1. He told Celebrimbor that the information was “a gift” to help him better forge mithril.

A clear allusion to perhaps Sauron’s most powerful form, Halbrand returns as Annatar, Lord of Gifts, seducing the Elves once again and completing his work.

Thanks to Galadriel, Sauron’s disguise as Halbrand, the King of the Southlands, has been blown. But what happens next?

In Tolkien’s universe, Sauron appears to the elven smiths of Eregion as Annatar, the Lord of Gifts, imparts knowledge to them and forges the Rings of Power with them. And this is exactly what happens at the beginning of the second season of “The Rings of Power”. We see Halbrand/Sauron with long blond hair, talking to ringsmith Celebrimbor and introducing himself as “one who shares gifts”.

As Annatar, Sauron resembles a high elf from Valinor, pure, noble and graceful. In the series, he poses as an emissary of the Valar. Since he also passes on valuable knowledge, he is called “Gift-Bringer” or “Lord of Gifts”.

A new look for Charlie Vickers

Instead of recasting Sauron, Amazon decided to simply put a wig on Halbrand actor Charlie Vickers. He really does remind us a little of Legolas. The elves from Lindon know that Sauron is hiding behind Halbrand because Galadriel exposed him. But the messengers from the kingdom don’t seem to be able to find their way to Eregion.

Sauron/Annatar simply told Celebrimbor that he was acting on a secret mission and that he was only now able to assume his true form as Annatar. He seduced Celebrimbor to forge more rings of power with him, supposedly to save the peoples of Middle Earth. The elf smith is proud of his work and longs to create something that will go down in the history of Middle Earth forever. This makes it easy for Annatar to manipulate him to his liking.

A new episode of “The Rings of Power” awaits you every week on Amazon Prime Video. The grand finale, episode 8, will be shown on October 3, 2024.
