First sales figures have been released for the latest PS5 exclusive to date. Although there seemed to be little room for doubt, it would indeed be the absolute failure expected.
It’s been just over a week since Concord was released on PS5 and PC. While we already saw thanks to SteamDB that the hero shooter didn’t do well on the latter, there were still doubts on the Sony console. But it seems like the failure was total if the first truly appalling sales figures are to be believed.
The sad crash of the excluded PS5 Concord is confirmed again
Highlighted at length in the last State of Play, Concord seems to have arrived on PC and PS5 on August 23 with almost total indifference. With the peak of concurrent players connected on Steam barely reaching 700, we already knew that Firewalk Studios and Sony’s gaming service had completely missed its target on PC. On PS5, a platform where such numbers are generally well guarded, this was not yet certain.
Unfortunately, if you believe IGN, both points are confirmed as absolute failures. A week after its release, Concord sold just 25,000 copies. To be more precise, it would be 15,000 copies sold on PS5 and 10,000 on PC. However, such an estimate raises questions about the latter, given the completely deserted state of the servers. However, the hero shooter, which was supposed to compete with Overwatch 2, clearly did not find its audience. The fault probably lies in a high entry price of 40 dollars for currently relatively limited content, while other games in the same genre tend to rely on a free-to-play model and characters that players seem to have difficulty identifying with.
A bitter failure for Firewalk Studios and Sony
After eight years of incubation, the PS5 exclusive therefore promises to be a sad shipwreck, unless it soon enters PS Plus and becomes free to play. It is also a heavy blow to Sony’s game services strategy. It is obviously not a global hit like Helldivers 2. We can also draw a parallel with another service game recently ported to PS5 courtesy of Microsoft: Sea of Thieves. Both were released at a price of 40 dollars, but with diametrically opposite results.
Rare’s pirate game also landed like a cannonball on the Sony console, causing players to be excited about what would happen with its direct competitor. Let’s hope that the Japanese giant’s next attempt in the game service sector will be more successful.
