Microsoft complains about Apple guidelines making Xbox Cloud Gaming app impossible
Although Apple changed the rules a few months ago to allow streaming of video game applications, it seems that this is not enough for Microsoft. The company assures that at present it is impossible that we see an Xbox Cloud Gaming app in the iPhone or iPad App Store.
According to reports The VergeDespite the change in App Store regulations, Microsoft found up to 10 Apple guidelines that make cloud gaming impossible.
Microsoft has identified a number of other provisions in Apple’s guidelines that continue to limit its ability to distribute and operate a native Cloud Gaming app on iOS.
Xbox Cloud Gaming still doesn’t have an app for iPhone or iPad
Microsoft assures that Apple’s guidelines “still present a barrier to native cloud gaming apps”because, apparently, it cannot meet it both technically and economically. Microsoft does not consider it viable for the iPhone application to include Apple’s in-app purchase functions, as this would require a complete overhaul of the platform.
Furthermore, the Apple’s 30% commission ‘makes it impossible’ for Microsoft to monetize its cloud gaming service on the iPhone because, as they state, it is not “economically sustainable or justifiable.” Microsoft also complains about Apple’s lack of support for alternative app stores and the limitations that web apps face, such as the inability to access the device’s hardware features.
In fact, Apple’s IAP fee rate is set at a level that is neither economically viable nor justifiable. The 30% fee prevents Microsoft from effectively monetizing its cloud gaming service offering because Guideline 3.1.3(b) prevents different content, subscriptions, or features (including cross-platform game consumables) from being offered to iOS users (. compared to content, subscriptions, and features offered on other platforms).
Microsoft has explained its position to UK regulators, who will consider this and other allegations when making a decision. Interestingly, Apple issued a statement in which they assured that They “supported and encouraged” cloud gaming services on iOS. However, what could be the largest cloud gaming platform, Xbox Cloud Gaming, remains unavailable on iPhone as a standalone app.
THE The UK Competition and Markets Authority is currently conducting an investigation market in mobile browsers, browser engines and the distribution of cloud gaming services through app stores in the UK, which could force Apple to take action. It is true that Microsoft could launch its own independent app store that includes Xbox Cloud Gaming, as Epic Games recently did, although this would only be available in Europe.
