News culture Here are 7 films coming to theaters in September 2024, including one of the greatest directors of all time
This month of September, cinemas will welcome many small and large films from all genres: there are mainly projects that are expected to be very long and others that promise nice surprises. So for us it was worth making a small selection.

- Weekend in Taipei
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
We no longer present Tim Burton, one of the most important directors of his time, to whom we owe many highlights with a very special tone. In this batch we must mention Beetljuice, released in 1988 and which offers a sequel in due form, marking the return of Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder in their respective roles, as well as the arrival of some stars such as Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe or Monica Belluci. We will therefore witness the Deetz family return to Winter River, where young Astrid inadvertently opens a portal to the afterlife, forcing her parents to bring back the famous ghost Beetlejuice to restore the situation. A morbid comedy that fully flirts with horror: tell yourself that it’s a bit too early for Halloween.

The wire
Daniel Auteuil can already boast of being one of the greatest actors in French history, but it also happens that he sometimes goes behind the camera: we already owe him some very good feature films, and “Le Fil” is perhaps one of his best selected at the Cannes Film Festival. Here, the Frenchman is also an actor, playing Maître Jean Monier, a lawyer determined to return to the criminal field to defend Nicolas Milik, a father accused of the murder of his wife, whom he deeply believes is innocent. Then begins a violent trial in which doubts and convictions clash violently: a story that promises beautiful humanity and intense suspense, coupled with a very beautiful soundtrack and some striking lines.

Speak no evil
James McAvoy tore it apart in Split and Glass, and you have to believe that the roles of unstable madmen are his secret pleasure: in Speaks No Evil, he plays a charming family man who welcomes an American family into his home. The small problem is that, with gestures that are a little inappropriate, even downright aggressive, he gradually shows some psychological breakdowns: the situation goes from bad to worse and should a priori turn into a drama… at least that’s what the band’s announcement promises about it. This film was directed by James Watkins, author of the scary film The Lady in Black with Danield Radcliffe or the filthy Eden Lake. A priori, he knows the discomfort and we will have a new cinematic demonstration of it from September 18th.

- With : James McAvoy, Mackenzie Davis, Scoot McNairy
Megalopolis
Certainly one of the most anticipated films of this year… even of this decade and the one before. First of all, you should know that it is directed by Francis Ford Coppola, the living legend of the Seventh Art behind The Godfather, Apocalypse Now and Dracula. Moreover, Megalopolis is a very long-standing project of the filmmaker, who has wanted to make it a reality for decades: obviously, the hype is at its peak now that the film is about to be released. And hey, its unique concept largely inspires intent, as the context is set in the city of New Rome, a modern urban megalopolis that has emerged directly from Roman antiquity, with science fiction to boot. With its completely insane universe, unique artistic direction, truly impressive cast and the talent of Coppola, we are happy to say that Megalopolis is a huge and promising work in progress.

Emmanuelle
Basically, Emmanuelle is a French film from 1974 that had acquired a sulphurous and worldwide reputation for its eroticism, let’s say, decidedly. So here we are in 2024 with a new interpretation by Audrey Diwan, a long-time screenwriter but also a director who will therefore set out her vision for this protagonist, now played by Noémie Marlant (Tár): Here, Emmanuelle goes to Hong Kong on a professional trip and multiplies encounters and experiences. Then she meets Kei, a man who constantly escapes her … A hot film that should play with very beautiful photography and a masterful atmosphere, without forgetting the presence of some great talents such as Naomi Watts or Jamie Campbell Bower.

Motherland
A mother, two sons, a house. What could go wrong? Absolutely anything: in Mother Land, the famous Halle Berry plays a mother in a destroyed world where she and her two sons are connected to their home in the middle of the forest by a rope that must not be broken under any circumstances. Pretext. In the surroundings, an evil presence that no one here wants to meet: heavy atmosphere, deadly secrets and jump scares are therefore on the program of a horror film by Alexandre Aja, not just anyone, because we already have The Hill Has Eyes to thank him for. Mirror and Crawl. That’s why we await his next success with special attention.

Weekend in Taipei
There are couples that are more explosive than others: here John Lawlor is a DEA agent who is particularly good at what he does (meaning: dangerous), while Joey Kwang is an excellent pilot. Fifteen years after their hasty separation, fate brings them back together in Taipei, as Joey has married a gigantic boss of the local underworld and now there is a son in the equation. In short, nothing goes as planned and the couple finds a better way to escape the clutches of organized crime while breaking jaws and roaming the streets: this very solid action film looks really cool, with a tone that is supposed to be halfway between the Transporter and Taken. Why not, especially with a good bucket of popcorn in hand.
