The Segovia town of 200 inhabitants that hides a large investment from Apple

When we think of Apple, we always tend to associate it with buying something, whether it’s a new iPhone 16, AirPods… And it’s a company that makes billions of dollars a year in products and services. On the other hand, Apple is also one of the leading companies in the ecological transitionalready having several carbon neutral products and carrying transformation plans in different parts of the world.

These include huge solar and wind power plants in China. Much closer, in Segovia and since April, Apple has also been carrying out its first solar power plant project in USA to counter the energy and carbon consumption generated by its products.

Apple’s million dollar investment just 20 kilometers from Segovia

In the small town of Martín Miguel (Segovia), a project is underway that will not only transform the local landscape, but will also change the lives of the neighbors forever. Apple chose this town of barely 200 inhabitants to establish a solar power plant that will become a key element of its sustainable development strategy.

The photovoltaic plant under construction in Martín Miguel will be Apple’s first investment in renewable energy in USA. With a budget of 350 million dollarsThis project will not only contribute to Apple’s goals of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030, but will also bring a series of economic benefits to the municipality.

The mayor of Martín Miguel, César Palomo, highlights the positive impact of this investment: “The solar project is a historic opportunity for our municipality. With the arrival of Apple, the council estimates that we will receive around one million dollars in building permits and 200,000 dollars per year in taxesThis represents a significant increase in our budget, which currently stands at around 220,000 dollars per year.

The agreement includes the rental of land for the photovoltaic plant at a price of approximately 1,000 dollars per year and per hectare, for a period of 25 years. This agreement provides the city with a stable source of revenue for decades to come.

There are only two of them in the world, but they are capable of disassembling hundreds of iPhones and resurrecting their vital components.

The environment wins and the neighbors win

In addition to the economic benefits, the project also has a strong environmental component. The solar power plant will have 677,000 panels and an installed capacity of more than 400 megawatts. The company in charge of developing the project, IB Vogt, has committed to minimizing the environmental impact. Notable measures include reforesting the perimeter of the plant, installing nest boxes for native birds and creating a 10-hectare protected habitat. In addition, work will stop during the breeding season to protect local wildlife.

Apple’s arrival in Martín Miguel also opens the door to new opportunities for the city and its neighbors. The money generated could be essential to adding more services to the city and therefore improve the quality of life. You might even attract new neighbors who see this solar power plant as an opportunity.

For Apple, this investment in the people of Segovia is essential to counteract the environmental impact of its global business. By developing a solar power plant of this magnitude, Apple will be able to offset a significant portion of carbon emissions generated by the production and distribution of its devices, progressing towards its ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. Furthermore, on a financial level, reducing its reliance on conventional energy sources also means significant long-term savings on energy costs, allowing it to balance its environmental impact and continue to be a highly profitable business.

From Applesfera we will be attentive to the entire implementation of the installation. And who knows if, once finished, we will take the opportunity to make a photographic route there, as we also did recently in a small town in Madrid.
