THE The calculator has received major improvements with iOS 18: it finally arrived on iPad and is integrated into the Notes app. With all these features, who needs a regular calculator? Yes, just the one with a small solar panel or the one that ran on batteries. Many of us remember them from our high school days and, with the advent of smartphones, we no longer used them.
On the other hand, you have surely had the feeling of calculating something with iPhone and not getting the result. We may think that we did not press the screen correctly, that there was an error in the data… However, a last post about X went viral for this reason.
On iPhone this gives a result of 150, on the traditional calculator 200
How is it possible that a sum and a multiplic ation gives such a different result
Can you explain this 🤔 pic.twitter.com/rYX6twPjOL

The operation is simple: 50 + 50 x 2. Our mind will say that it must give a result of 200, since we add 50 + 50 and the result is 100. Then we multiply it by two and that gives us 200. This is how the traditional calculator works, while the iPhone gives a completely different result: remains at 150.
Do you remember the parentheses? Yes, sometimes they are essential to perform mathematical operations correctly, and this is one of the cases. What we really want to do is (50+50) x 2. This is what traditional calculator programming means.
However, What the iPhone understands is 50 + (50 x 2)since it follows the order of what we have entered. To obtain a value identical to that of the traditional calculator, you should press = after adding then multiply it. By the way, what my math teacher always told me: “Use equals to plus. This way you will avoid mistakes.” I never thought that from high school to today, I would end up writing a paper about it and remembering her.
Activate the scientific calculator on your iPhone
To avoid this (and also have more features), the iPhone scientific calculator is your solution. To activate this calculator, simply go to the “Calculator” app and click on the calculator icon next to zero. Here you can choose the scientistwhich will already have the parentheses to be able to do this operation correctly.
These advanced calculator features are coming with iOS 18 and you can install them on your iPhone from Monday September 16. Therefore, pay close attention to software updates to take advantage of these and hundreds of other improvements that are offered to you for free.
