If you were lucky enough to have lived through the seventh console generation in your youth and had enough disposable income to buy a few games a month, you were in a very good place. You probably have countless fond memories of every big new game that studios released with alarming frequency at the time, and you had no idea what “games as a service” actually meant. It was great.
What’s not so happy about it, however, is the reliability of these machines. The Xbox 360, of course, was plagued by the “Red Ring of Death” scandal, a huge and expensive technical design and consumer rights mistake that cost Microsoft billions of dollars to correct. The PS3 suffered a similar “Yellow Ring of Death” scandal, and while it wasn’t as severe or widespread as Microsoft’s problem, it still affected a lot of people, and if you were lucky enough to have a working PS3, it was almost certainly going to die. The big deal: clean it seriously and replace the thermal paste. Honestly. Do it. It will eventually die no matter what you do, but don’t take any chances.
It’s not like the seventh generation was the only one to be plagued by widespread technical issues. Every console generation suffers from some common problem or several, usually caused or exacerbated by overheating and therefore usually associated with particularly demanding games. So which of these system-destroying games are the best? Well, that’s the truth we’re going to get to the bottom of in this panel show, hosted by Jim Trinca, with regular panelists Tom Orry and Sherif Saed, and special guest Eurogamer’s Ian Higton (who’s my favourite, very handsome and usually has no odour).
