A new update from Sony fuels speculation about a new model of the PlayStation VR 2 VR headset without tangled cables.
PlayStation fans are eagerly speculating about a new model of the PlayStation VR 2, which, unlike the previous version, could possibly do without cables. This would give players significantly more freedom when using the VR headset and could position the hardware as a direct competitor to the Meta Quest 3.
Most recently, a new patent had already addressed features that are not available in the current PSVR 2, and thus fueled the first rumors about a new VR headset model. Yesterday, September 12th, Sony presented some new features such as the Welcome Hub, 3D audio profiles and more in a system update post on the PlayStation 5 – and thus sparked further speculation.
The Welcome Hub allows the use of widgets and players can choose which ones they want to see on their screen. There is also a battery widget, where Sony uses different icons, such as a DualSense, to show which device is displaying the respective battery level.
What’s interesting is that there was also a battery indicator for the VR headset, but up to now this has only been available in a wired version – and this one doesn’t have a battery. So is Sony already preparing to release a wireless model of PlayStation VR 2?
After players raised the issue of the icon, Sony quietly replaced the corresponding image material and icon. We can only speculate whether this was simply to correct a faulty representation or whether something was actually afoot. However, the objection from the community is probably justified that it would make little sense for Sony to work on a corresponding icon if nothing was actually planned.
Instead of the supposedly wireless PSVR 2, the only icon you can now select in the Welcome Hub is the one for the PSVR 2 controllers – and they actually have batteries. The headset icon is currently no longer available.
