New GTA Online update interrupts Steam Deck support

Today, Grand Theft Auto Online has received an update that finally adds anti-cheating software to the PC version of the crime simulation. But not everyone is happy, because this update now makes it impossible to GTAOnline on Steam Deck.

It may be hard to believe, but GTAOnline is now 11 years oldThe game was played parallel to the Grand Theft Auto V back on the Xbox 360 and PS3. It later came to the PC in 2015 and was also ported to Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4 and PS5. And although it is extremely popular, the PC version of almost a decade GTAOnline It lacked a proper anti-cheat system to stop players from using mod menus and other tools to cause chaos and gain unfair advantages. But that changed on Tuesday, which is nice, unless you enjoyed playing GTAOnline on Valve’s portable PC.

On 17 September Rockstar has released a new update for GTAOnline on all platforms. As part of the update of the PC version GTAOnline now includes BattlEye, a proprietary anti-cheat software used in many other games. Most PC gamers were happy about this. GTAOnline has earned a good reputation over the years because it is full of scammers, Modders and annoying trollsThe hope is that BattleEye will stop some of it and make playing easier GTAOnline a better experience on PC in 2024.

However, in a new FAQ about BattlEye included in GTAOnlineRockstar confirms you can no longer play GTAOnline on Steam Deck. Players can continue to enjoy GTA V’s Story Mode on Deck, but online play is not supported.

And to be clear, this is not entirely the fault of BattlEye, which is included in many games, some of which work on the Linux-based Steam Deck. Rockstar could theoretically update GTAOnline to support BattlEye on Steam Deck in a future patch, but the next part of the FAQ seems to indicate that this may not happen. Here is what Rockstar says about GTA-V on Steam Deck:

Note: GTAV and GTA Online are not officially supported on Steam Deck and all technical support questions should be directed to Valve’s Steam Deck support content and community.

This seems like Rockstar is washing its hands of the matter and moving on. Maybe I’m wrong, but I wouldn’t hold my breath that GTAOnline will ever be playable on Steam Deck again.

In other “Rockstar updates” news, an update for the publisher’s PC launcher contained some folders that were GTA6 And Red Dead Redemption.

The files were quickly removed and as far as I can tell, there was nothing too exciting in them. But it’s just further proof that Rockstar seems to be working on a PC port of Red Dead RedemptionThis open-world western has been trapped on consoles since its release in 2010. Over the last year or so, evidence seems to be mounting that maybe, just maybe, RDR will finally get the PC port it deserves.
