Big disappointment about the latest games of the license

Big, Disappointment, Games, latest, license

Despite their many qualities, FF7 Rebirth and Final Fantasy 16 unfortunately did not make Square Enix happy, which reported a disappointing record in this regard.

Unlike previous games in the legendary license, the results for FF7 Rebirth and Final Fantasy 16 were well below Square Enix’s expectations, according to a report released today by the publisher that reviews the figures for the end of the 2024 fiscal year.

No fantastic numbers for FF7 Rebirth and Final Fantasy 16

While Final Fantasy 16 was released on PC yesterday (and seems to have major graphics issues on PS5, among other games), a report from Square Enix from last May reports the numbers for “ HD gaming sub-segment », mainly carried for the 2024 fiscal year of the publisher of FF 16 and FF7 Rebirth. We already knew that the second game did not have the success Square Enix expected upon its release, and was even clearly beaten by an unexpected underdog: Helldivers 2.

A few months later, the cold results of FF7 Rebirth and Final Fantasy 16 are unfortunately no longer glorious. Square Enix puts it in black and white in its review: ” We have released several major HD games such as Rebirth and the 16th episodeA License, but unfortunately the revenue does not meet our expectations “. Although this division earned the publisher 99.2 billion yen (about 20 billion more than the previous fiscal year), it lost 8.1 billion yen in “operating income.”

Are such results due to the PS5 exclusive nature of Final Fantasy 16 and FF7 Rebirth? It is still too early to say if the sixteenth opus will be able to keep up with the PC version and if FF7 Rebirth will also catch up when ported to the computer. In any case, these not really fantastic figures for such big titles have encouraged Square Enix to rethink its exclusivity strategy, both for the Final Fantasy franchise and for its future productions more broadly. A successful operation for the publisher and the players? Time will tell.
