In episode 5 of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” season 2, Sauron’s death warrant is signed. Did you spot the brief moment that seals his fate?
Elendil (Lloyd Owen) is a main character in Amazon’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”. During the course of the second season, he is stripped of his rank as captain and forced to give up his sword. What seems like a brief moment with little far-reaching consequence is in fact the death sentence for Sauron.
By giving up his sword, Elendil now has his hands free for a new weapon, a weapon that we already know from the “Lord of the Rings” films and that was already hinted at in the first season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”. A weapon that cuts the One Ring from Sauron’s hand in the final battle of the Last Alliance.
We are, of course, talking about the sword Narsil, which is still in Míriel’s (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) chambers in the first season of the Amazon series. Narsil can be seen briefly when she leads Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) to the Palantír.
Narsil is in Míriel’s possession and only needs to be passed on to Elendil
It has not been confirmed that the sword we see in the fourth episode of the first season is actually Narsil. However, the design of the sword is so reminiscent of the design of the sword in Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” films that we can probably assume so.
It would also be fitting that the sword that Elendil will wield in the near future is in Míriel’s possession. The two have become close allies over the last few episodes, so it would make sense that Míriel would pass the sword on to Elendil, who, now weaponless, can do more with it than she can.
In the Battle of the Last Alliance, with which the Amazon series is supposed to end, Elendil wields the weapon against Sauron. In the fight, Sauron destroys the sword and mortally wounds Elendil. However, Isildur (Maxim Baldry) grabs the broken blade of the sword, which is still sharp and pointed, and uses it to cut off Sauron’s finger and thus the ring.
Sauron, who has linked his life energy to the ring, then disintegrates and loses his physical form. The ring goes to Isildur.
Narsil later becomes Aragorn’s sword
Elrond (Hugo Weaving in the films) eventually displays the fragments of Narsil in Rivendell, where we see them in “The Fellowship of the Ring”. In the third film, “The Return of the King”, Elrond reforges the sword and renames it: Anduril, the Flame of the West.
He gives the sword to Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), a descendant of Elendil, to take up his inheritance as King of Men. With the newly forged blade, Aragorn is finally able to summon the ghost army of the King of the Dead and thus win the Battle of Pelennor.
Currently, “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 2 is being released weekly on Amazon Prime Video. There is always one episode available to stream every Thursday. Work is said to already be underway on “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 3.
