Beetlejuice is so good, so everyone was looking forward to what Tim Burton would direct next. Turns out, he’s going to direct Season 2 on Wednesday.
Collider shared the news, saying Burton will direct four of the eight episodes, just like he did in season 1. Production is already underway, so perhaps fans of the hit Netflix series won’t have to wait too long (season 1 was released in 2022).

Since the Beetlejuice sequel still grossed a respectable amount of money at the box office (relative to its $100 million production budget), hopes are high for a third sequel, but that’s far from confirmed, especially with co-star Jenna Ortega busy starring in (and now producing) Wednesday and preparing to promote multiple upcoming films, including an adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel Clara and the Sun.
Series co-creator Al Gough said Burton’s relationship with Ortega was one of the main reas ons he stuck around for season two: “He just loves the show, loves doing it, loves working with Jenna, and it’s great. Believe me, we’re thrilled because I’m like you, I thought he was going to be like, ‘I did it. Peace be to you.’ Yeah. No, he doesn’t do that. I think when he’s passionate about something… that’s the way it is, he’s not cynical at all. I think that’s another reason why Beetlejuice worked, because he didn’t make the movie for any other reason than to make the movie. He wanted to tell this story. There’s no cynicism. It’s totally Tim.”
Another big selling point for the second season may be the greater focus on horror elements rather than romance, something Ortega pushed hard after the huge success of the first season, which made it one of Netflix’s highest-grossing series of all time.
While reviews have been mostly positive, many feel there’s room for improvement, and Ortega herself has been one of the most vocal in openly discussing the show’s shortcomings on both the comedic and romantic fronts. If anything, it’ll be interesting to see how season two pans out now that she’s taking a more proactive stance in front of and behind the camera.
