Solving a question by asking it on the phone, or generating a text by asking it vocally, are functions that Gemini, Google’s latest AI, can handle. And its assistant is gradually losing the spotlight, it is very easy to switch to said Gemini. In my opinion, it is a better option even if it still has drawbacks.
Google is very prone to duplicating services and confusing different ways of doing the same thing. And when it comes to personal assistants, it hasn’t gotten much better: even though it’s had Google Assistant since 2016, it now coexists with Gemini AI. In fact, I can switch between them by playing with my Android settings. It is very easy to configure the new default wizard.
Gemini is probably already built into your Android
All new Android phones certified by Google and equipped with the company’s services and applications, They already come with Gemini as the default assistant. The system still asks you for it at startup, so if you recently set up your phone, Google Assistant has probably been left in the background. Be careful, this does not disappear: the two assistants will coexist on your Android.
Google is putting a special emphasis on using Gemini. If you’ve already downloaded its app from Google Play, you’ll have received a notification asking you to make the new AI your personal assistant. If not, or if you didn’t previously install the app, you can migrate your assistant in a few steps.

How to put Gemini instead of continuing to use Google Assistant as your assistant on your Android mobile? Let’s look at both possible ways.
If you have not installed the Gemini app
- The first thing is to download the Gemini app: it’s on Google Play.
- Open the application and start its configuration.
- Gemini will offer you the switch from Google Assistant to the new AI. Confirm with the “Use Gemini” button that it will be your personal assistant. Ready.
It is very likely that you have not installed Gemini and yet it has appeared among your applications: Google can install the application as the default system. In this case, open Gemini and follow the same steps.
If you have already installed the Gemini app
- Go to your mobile settings and type in “Google”.
- Click on “Google App Settings”.
- Select “Search, Assistant & Voice”.
- Scroll down to “Google Assistant” or “Gemini”. It’s independent (Google’s duplicity thing).
- Find the “Google Digital Assistants” menu and select Gemini from the settings screen.
Gemini isn’t as comprehensive as Google Assistant yet, but it’s making progress
Overall, both AIs are a complete personal assistant that answers your questions, opens apps, can manage phone settings and other options. Gemini is focused on generative AI– You can ask it to create code or text for you, for example. Google Assistant still works best as an assistant, since the Gemini is not very compatible with routines or home automation; although in many cases it relies on Google Assistant itself.
Once you switch to Gemini, this AI will be the one that jumps out when you summon the personal assistant. If you want to switch back to Google Assistant, just follow the process and revert the changes. Even so, the poor Assistant doesn’t have much left: Google will eventually bury it under Gemini.
