In season 1 of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” we met the Harfeet, an ancient people of hobbits who lived very differently from the hobbits we met in “The Lord of the Rings”. The Harfeet are nomads and constantly move from place to place.
The hobbits, on the other hand, live very comfortably in the Shire, in lush green hills – permanently! At least when they are not on their way to bring the One Ring to Mordor.
But now, in season 2, we get to know the Stares. Like the Harfeet, they are one of the original peoples of the Hobbits. And unlike the Harfeet, the Stares prefer to stay in one place their whole lives – just like the Hobbits! But life in the desert of Rhun is not always easy, which is why many years ago one of the Stares set out to find the “Suzat” – a place that sounds a lot like the later Shire.
Smials – proven across generations of hobbits!
The Stares already live in the desert in caves that they call Smials, a term that is also later used by the Hobbits. They are built directly into the rocks and stones of the desert and later into the soft hills of the Shire.
Smials have the advantage that they are very inconspicuous and blend in well with their surroundings. Over the years, the hobbits improved their construction more and more. The Smials were always very solidly built and equipped.
Rounded walls and many branches are characteristic. If the hobbits were well off, the walls were also panelled with wood, while the floors were tiled and carpeted. Round windows and a round door were standard features.
One of the most famous Smials is probably Bag End, where Bilbo and Frodo Baggins lived. The Great Smials in Tookland are also very well known, as is the Brandy Estate in Buckland. Several generations of families usually lived there at the same time.
