Square Enix is already working on the fourth installment of one of its most beloved franchises: Kingdom Hearts. But anyone who is a fan of this saga knows that its story is notoriously difficult to follow, especially if you are new to Sora’s adventure. Between spin-offs spread across various platforms (although they are now all grouped together in different collections), mobile games and long developments, discovering everything is always complicated.
Something the company wants to avoid with its next game, which It is planned as a reboot.
A new beginning without forgetting the past
This is how Tetsuya Nomura defined it in the Japanese media Young Jumo, where he explained that Kingdom Hearts IV is designed as a “restart” in which it will be easier for new players to get hooked on the story. He assures that this title and the upcoming Missing Link for mobile phones follow this idea. For this, He hires new writers and changes the saga’s logo to make everything simpler.
I consider Missing Link and 4 to be a reboot. I wanted to end it with 3, or rather reset it, so I appointed new writers and even created a new logo to make it easier for new people to access.
But that doesn’t mean that all of the above is useless. Kingdom Hearts IV will continue to function as a continuation of the third installment. Fans will find the story they’ve been waiting for and the answers they’ve been longing for, but from a new perspective that will allow new players to enter the saga.
For those who know how Kingdom Hearts 3 ends, the reason Sora ends this way in the finale is because we wanted to reset the story in some way. This should make it even easier for newcomers to jump into the story from Kingdom Hearts 4. Fans of the Kingdom Hearts series may also be thinking “oh, so this is THAT”, but we’re making this game hoping that new players will be able to enjoy it too.

Kingdom Hearts 4 was announced for 2022, though details about it have been scarce since then. Leaks have already claimed that it is targeting a 2025 release.
