Nintendo celebrates 135 years in business

business, celebrates, Nintendo, Years

Now 135 years old, Nintendo has endured as both a business and an innovator since its founding on September 23, 1889 during the Meiji era.

You probably already know the story, but Fusajiro Yamauchi started Nintendo as the Hanafuda trading card company in 1889 before expanding into other lines of business, including hospitality (supposedly) and toymaking, then eventually allowing him to find his 1970s video game call.

And the company couldn’t have come at a better time, as its Nintendo Entertainment System was widely hailed as the “savior” of the video game industry during the 1983 video game crash.

From there, he invented the trackpad or d-pad as we know it, ushered in the era of 3D gaming in the style of Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, brought families together to play on the Nintendo Wii, and now he’s about to leave his latest console behind – the second best-selling video game system of all time – is on hiatus, and a sequel is in the works.

What are your fondest memories of Nintendo games? Are you looking forward to what the future holds for the company? Feel free to sound off in the comments below.
