Jonathan Ive is one of those names and people who will go down in history. With Steve Jobs, he was the architect of emblematic models such as the iPhone, the iMac G3, the iPad… Apple would not be understood without himand it would not be understood without Apple. However, in 2019, Jonathan Ive said goodbye to Apple, after almost 30 years of continuous work.
The reasons for his departure from Apple were very specific. He wanted to develop further personally and start his own business. Actually, Apple would continue to collaborate with him externally for product design and consulting. However, thanks to this freedom that he has enjoyed since 2019, he has been able to create the most diverse products, from record players to jacket buttons.
From Cupertino to Jackson Square in San Francisco: the start of a new chapter for Jonathan Ive
San Francisco’s central Jackson Square neighborhood became Jonathan Ive’s new home after saying goodbye to Apple. It was in 2020, in the middle of a pandemic, when I decided to invest in this area of the citywhile many investors fled. According to him, he owed a lot to the city. This is why bought a building on Montgomery Street for $8.5 million. But it didn’t stop there. Jonathan Ive wanted to bring life back to the neighborhood and quietly continued to purchase many more properties, investing nearly $90 million.
This is perhaps Jonathan Ive’s most ambitious project: the transformation of an entire neighborhood. He kept the secret for five years.. The plan includes renaturalizing the area, an events pavilion, more LoveFrom studios and even a store where they will sell their own products.
LoveFrom, Jonathan Ive’s company that goes beyond design
At the heart of this new neighborhood are the offices of LoveFrom, named after the company Jonathan Ive created after leaving Apple. A name which in turn It’s a tribute to Steve Jobs
In their three-story studios in Jackson Square, Ive and his team work on a variety of projects that defy expectations. From the coronation emblem of King Charles III to inside the first electric Ferrarito a revolutionary jacket for Moncler that will sell for more than $2,000.
Airbnb was also one of the first customers of LoveFrom, who contributed to the redesign of the platform, the introduction of three-dimensional icons in its application and the development of the concept called “travel postcards”.
“What I’m learning is to trust my intuition more than ever,” Ive says, reflecting a freer, more experimental approach that contrasts with the meticulous planning that characterized his work at Apple.
Jonathan Ive’s ambitions go beyond urban renewal and luxury product design. We recently learned that he was working with OpenAI’s Sam Altman on a new artificial intelligence device it could redefine our interaction with technology. The goal would be to create something as revolutionary as the iPhone, and the project has already raised hundreds of millions of dollars in private funding.
Actually, Jonathan Ive assembled a team which includes Tang Tan, who oversaw iPhone product development at Apple. And Evans Hankey, who succeeded Ive as head of design at Cupertino. Will it eventually become Apple’s own competitor?
