Patrick McKay and JD Payne, the showrunners of “The Rings of Power”, have already announced that there should be five seasons of the “Lord of the Rings” series if they had their way – but it doesn’t go their way. Ultimately, Amazon Prime Video must first confirm each additional season.
With a large project like “The Rings of Power,” various factors depend on an extension. According to Amazon, the series is one of the streaming service’s greatest successes, but it is also the most expensive series, regardless of the high costs for the rights to the Tolkien originals, which Amazon has already paid for.
But fans can now probably breathe a sigh of relief. According to that Hollywood Reporter Showrunners Patrick McKay and JD Payne recently signed a new three-year deal with Amazon MGM Studios.
Reports that only a fraction of Prime Video subscribers actually finished watching the first season contradict Amazon’s own statements and suggest that Amazon simply doesn’t want to admit to investors that the costly investment is falling short of expectations . Is Amazon putting all its eggs in one basket and ordering more seasons in the hope that interest will increase?

At least it looks like Amazon won’t be pulling out of the Middle-earth business any time soon. In the industry publication Production Weekly “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power 03” has already been listed, indicating the start of pre-production.
Even if Amazon is saving the official extension of the fantasy series, the streaming service seems to have already decided internally on a sequel.
In this way, the waiting time for the third season can of course be significantly shortened; if filming starts in 2024, season 3 could end up streaming on Amazon as early as 2025. Possibly a sensible strategy to avoid competition from “House of the Dragon”, where season 3 will probably not be finished until 2026 – if it comes!
