The Atelier series has been a constant in the world of JRPGs for over two decades, with a new installment every year. However, the next installment, Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories and Envisioned Land, is special, since it will be the first to arrive on Xbox consoles. To celebrate the moment, series producer Junzo Hosoi shared some details about the game during the Tokyo Game Show broadcast on Xbox.
In an interview, Hosoi revealed that his biggest reference for gaming was the first Halo: Combat Evolved. Although it may seem a strange connection between a serious military shooter and a JRPG series fantasy game, Hosoi explained that the experience of playing Halo for the first time made him realize how big the world can be in a game.
When I first discovered an open-world FPS, I realized how big the world could be. This new experience, even as a child, aroused a lot of enthusiasm in me.
The size of Halo’s sets influenced other Japanese creators
Although Halo: Combat Evolved isn’t an open-world game in the traditional sense, levels like “The Cartographer” are still famous for the freedom they offer players. In fact, Hosoi mentioned that this experience was very important at Atelier Yumia, with huge explorable fields that allow players to feel the feeling of discovering new places.
Interestingly, Hosoi wasn’t just praising Halo for his kindness in the rig owner storyline. In fact, years ago, in an interview with RPG websitethey asked him about the possibility of an Xbox port, and his response was:
The experience of walking onto a field for the first time and feeling the emotion is very important. Personally, I love Master Chief, so if there is a change, we would like to release it on Xbox.
