The start for Amazon’s new MMO hope Throne and Liberty was promising, but the hardest time is still ahead of the game – at least if you take a look at Amazon’s previous attempts in the genre.
More than 325,000 people threw themselves into the action on the servers of Thrones and Liberty when it was released. Although quite impressive in itself, compared to the other Amazon MMOs New World and Lost Ark, this is a rather slow entry. Lost Ark attracted 1.3 million simultaneous players at the start of 2022, while New World had 914,000.
However, if you compare the numbers with the current hits on Steam, things don’t look so bad for Throne and Liberty. Only long-running favorites Counter Strike 2, PUBG: Battlegrounds, Dota 2, Black Myth: Wukong and of course the fruit clicker Banana can inspire even more people at the moment.
The players of Throne and Liberty Mixed Ratings don’t seem to be all that enthusiastic about it. On Steam, the game barely manages to achieve an even rating in its reviews. Performance and graphics are quite good, which is probably due to the use of the current Unreal Engine.
However, there are also some technical deficiencies. Players complain about problems logging in and lags, which is now almost standard practice for MMOs at launch. Game mechanics and story, however, are not noticed by users or are not even noticed at all. It is criticized that this is standard MMO fare. Quests follow the pattern “Kill 20 monsters” or “Collect 20 plants” and overall the game lacks “soul”.

Especially with MMOs, it’s not necessarily the short-term success after launch that counts, but rather the number of players in the long term. Lost Ark and especially New World couldn’t maintain their strong start for long. The latter is now even trying to relaunch as New World: Aeternum. So it remains to be seen how the Throne and Liberty player base will develop in the future.
