This month’s deal for Xbox Game Pass subscribers is a feast of good games. Baseball fans can immerse themselves MLB The Show 24 Action fans can revisit the 2022 martial arts game just in time for the playoff season Sifuor you could enjoy the spooky atmosphere in the card-based roguelike Encryption. A title that may not immediately catch your eye, but is still worth your time Open streetsa game about a family road trip.
Open streets begins with the death of protagonist Tess’s grandmother and a spontaneous road trip to uncover old family secrets. Tess, voiced by Kaitlyn Dever (HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2 Abby), is a young girl with a contentious relationship with her mother Opal (The Americans Keri Russell). It’s a pretty familiar mother-daughter dynamic, but the third character, Opal’s mother and Tess’ grandmother, always looms over the two. She may be dead, but her secret is what sends Tess and Opal on an adventure that resolves their generational trauma.
This road trip is more about the few stops you make along the way than the journey, and you’re tasked with exploring these smaller spaces (an empty house full of moving boxes, an abandoned vacation home, a boat) on foot as Tess . All of these places are full of objects and traces of past lives that Tess and Opal must discover. The developers behind it Open streets formerly worked at Fullbright – from Went home Glory – So you run around and pick up items, just like in the groundbreaking running simulator from 2013. Just like Open streetsA spiritual predecessor, the story is told primarily through piecing together contextual clues found in the world’s environments and objects. Newspaper clippings, pictures, letters and more bring to light the (perhaps intentionally) forgotten frustrations between three generations of women in the family: Tess, Opal and the grandmother.
While Went home Have you explored an empty house on your own? Open streets always keeps Tess and Opal together. Instead of reminiscing in isolation, each discovery becomes an opportunity for dialogue between mother and daughter. This is one of Open streets greatest strengths, as Dever and Russel are both wonderful artists. Hearing the two actors play off each other feels less like a game and more like an intimate piece of theater. The game’s running time reflects this, as it takes around two hours at most to complete. If you want to experience a short but emotional story supported by excellent performances, then Open streets is the right game for you. Being included in Game Pass means you have no good reason not to play it. Even if you don’t like it, you’ve only lost two hours of your life.
