Another current gen-only game is getting a PS4 port

The PlayStation 4 and Xbox are almost 11 years oldbut they are still surprisingly popular and used by many people on a daily basis. That probably explains why Goat Simulator 3which was released back in 2022 as a current-gen only game, will now be ported to the older consoles later this month. And this isn’t the first time this has happened this year.

Released in November 2022 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, Goat Simulator 3 is the sequel to the original Goat simulator. (No, there are none Goat Simulator 2.) The sequel built on the open-world antics of the original 2014 game and was well received by fans of the first game. But maybe you haven’t bought a PS5 or Xbox Series X/S yet and still want to play this crazy, goat-filled sequel? Well, good news: Goat Simulator 3 will be available on October 24th for PS4 and Xbox One.

On October 8, Coffee Stain announced The Goat Simulator 3 made the jump back to PS4 and Xbox One. (In August this year Goat Sim 3 has been ported to Switch.) This upcoming version of the game will include all free content updates available Goat Sim 3 received since 2022. Goat Sim 3‘S Multiverse of nonsense DLC will also be available separately for the final generation.

If you already own the game on PS5 or Xbox Series X/S, cross-buy support will allow you to play it on the old consoles without having to purchase it again. And the Xbox ports also support cross-saves across generations. It’s a nice touch, although I’m not sure how many people own it Goat Sim 3 on PS5 it will load on PS4 shortly.

This situation reminds me of what we saw Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. This game appeared on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC, skipping last generation computers. But then in August 2023EA confirmed that it is porting Respawn’s blockbuster game to PS4 and Xbox One. These ports arrived in September this year and look pretty good. However, it feels like the last generation of consoles has been around longer than usual.

I mean, the PS4 is almost 11 years old. But even in 2024, publishers are still porting games to it. While that’s nice for PS4 owners who haven’t made the jump to the PS5 yet, for console manufacturers and the industry it feels like a bad sign that things can’t move forward yet or that there’s too much money left on the table. Perhaps GTA 6, which is expected to release only on next-generation consoles in 2025will finally push enough people to stop last-gen ports from happening.
