This is one of the most anticipated animated films of the year: Moana 2. On October 8th, Disney offered us a new trailer a month before the release of this sequel: scheduled for November 27th in cinemas.
A family feature film that many are waiting for, the first part of which was released in 2016 with great success. But although the film grossed $687 million at the box office, it was met with resistance from Polynesian audienceswhose culture inspires the feature film.
Additionally, Dwayne Johnson’s decision to voice the demigod Maui (one of the film’s main characters) was also heavily criticized, even though the actor was very involved in the project and wanted to honor his Polynesian roots. The character of Maui also caused great reluctance, as his obesity was considered a “cliché”. Despite everything, the film will be generally well received.
What will this sequel bring?
This sequel tells the rest of Moana’s adventures as she travels the seas of Oceania. This time it will be her Searching for a hidden island that could break a curse (a storm that threatens his family). An adventure that is always accompanied by Maui as well as new characters and opponents, such as the evil goddess Matangi.
This sequel was originally supposed to be a series on Disney+which is ultimately abandoned. Robert Iger, the CEO of Disney, announced in February 2024 that a film would be released instead.
So if there’s no hypothetical Moana 3 in sight, The license will return with a live-action film later in 2026. Announced in 2023 by Dwayne Johnson, the actor will return to his role as Maui. For Moana, it will not be Auli’l Carvalho (who lends her voice to the heroine in the original film), but the young actress Catherine Laga’aia. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on July 8, 2026.
