A tragic friendship. Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) and Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) were the perfect team and were more than just friends – they were family. Until Black Widow sadly died in Avengers: Endgame in 2019.
Johansson worked in the universe for a total of eleven years. Eight films and one solo film later there are still things the actress would have liked to see from her character.
Black Widow missed backstory
In an interview with MTV UK When asked which of her roles Scarlett Johansson would have liked to show the backstory for, the actress answered unequivocally: Black Widow.
I probably would have gone further back in Black Widow’s story and shown more of her dynamic with Hawkeye.

With this, Johansson addresses what many Marvel fans would probably have wanted for the superhero duo. Because their dynamic was one of the secret highlights in the Avengers films.
Keyword: “Just like in Budapest.” This quote has long since become a real running joke – although it has never been clarified what exactly this allusion is about. Fans would definitely be very happy about a reworking of this story.

What did we get instead?
Black Widow and Hawkeye fight over who will sacrifice themselves for the Soul Stone in Avengers: Endgame. Ultimately, Natasha Romanoff won and, defying death, threw herself down the cliffs.
In the solo series Hawkeye (2021), a year after the events, Clint tried to come to terms with the loss and move on without his long-time girlfriend.
The Black Widow solo film was also released in the same year, but it was also intended to prepare fans for that Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) follows in her sister’s footsteps.

Could Black Widow really return to the Marvel Universe?
In 2021, a court case took place between the actress and Disney. Johansson sued the entertainment giant for breach of her contract. However, the differences were resolved in the same year (via Hollywood Reporter). It wasn’t until July 2024 that the Hollywood star announced to the New York Times that she “holds no grudge against Disney.”
In 2025, the actress will actually celebrate a small Marvel comeback. Although not as Black Widow, she is listed as an executive producer in the new film Thunderbolts (via Screen Rant).
Nevertheless, Natasha’s legacy has continued since her death – namely from her sister Yelena Belova. In the upcoming Marvel film Thunderbolts, she provides fast-paced martial arts action as the new Black Widow and is supported by other characters such as Bucky Barnes aka Winter Soldier. The new project is coming on 30. April 2025 to the cinemas.
Whether we’ll ever see Natasha and Clint’s own adventure is written in the Marvel stars.
In any case, a new adventure awaits us with Thunderbolts, in which a version of the superhero can be found both in front of and behind the camera.
