After being announced in 2021, when we knew it was in development, Age of Empires Mobile landed in mobile stores to bring the strategy classic to the touch screen. on the way lost a good part of the strategygained slowdown times and many in-app purchases; resulting in a very decaffeinated Age of Empires.
I don’t know how many hours I’ve put into Age of Empires II, if I could count them I’d probably be embarrassed. Because it was always one of the flagship titles, the benchmark of what a good strategy title should be. The Sierra games were very good, I still have Caesar III, but there was something about Microsoft’s vision that drew me in more than any other game. And of course I was looking forward to the version mobile.
Age of Empires Mobile, a mobile game that stands out only by its name
Microsoft is not the company developing the game, behind it is Timi, one of Tencent’s studios. These are other games like Call of Duty Mobile, Arena of Valor or Pokémon Unite: they specialize in adaptation to mobile phones of major franchises applying simple mechanics, time limits, and slowed progression that can be sped up with microtransactions. This defines Age of Empires Mobile perfectly.

Automatic battles to gain a collection of heroes, advancement times which will be extended depending on their complexity (and which can be accelerated by paying), treasure chests with random items, rewards with more items than must be collected periodically and the functioning of the background setting little influenced by the player’s actions.
Without forgetting the legendary heroes that we will have to collect as if it were a Pokémon card game. Heroes who, as usual, can be purchased directly at the checkout.
Age of Empires Mobile is not a bad free game, it has high-level graphics, offers a diverse selection of historical eras and more or less follows the style set by Microsoft. The problem is that it doesn’t differ at all Regarding the hundreds of freemium resource management games that populate the Google Play Store: after playing it, I find no incentive to keep it on my Android. And that’s a shame.
If you like Age of Empires, I recommend that you do not download it, because it will surely disappoint you. If you want to play a simple resource management title from time to time, then this might be for you. Either way, it won’t cost you anything to try it: you can download Age of Empires for free from the Google Pay Store.
