The reviews are all in for the highly anticipated Sonic x Shadow Generations and it looks like reviewers have been enjoying Sonic and Shadow’s latest escapades. Sonic x Shadow Generations Metascore is at 80 on the popular review aggregator site, Metacritic. Unfortunately, the only reviews available for the game are on Sony’s PlayStation 5, as SEGA doesn’t seem to have sent a Nintendo Switch review code. Here are some excerpts from the reviews published today for Sonic x Shadow Generations:
“Sonic X Shadow Generations takes an already excellent game and takes it to new heights at lightning speed by doubling the length of the campaign with creative level design, fantastic bosses, plenty of collectibles and a significant graphical upgrade. While the all-new Shadow content isn’t necessarily long on its own, it adds a nice change of pace to the collection of all-time great Sonic stages that Generations already features, and there’s an exciting new story to fill out as you explore the overworld for collectibles, activities, and challenges. This collective remaster rises far above the previous improved versions we’ve received in the Sonic franchise, and will hopefully be the gold standard that Sega adheres to when it decides to bring back other Sonic games from the past.” IGN 9/10
“Sonic X Shadows Generations delivers a powerful one-two punch of fan service, delivering a solid remaster of a 2011 favorite and pairing it with a new game starring a fan favorite. The usual 3D Sonic platforming issues remain and the open-world hub of Shadow Generations might bother those who didn’t like Sonic Frontiers, but overall it’s a brilliant package.” VGC 4/5
“Shadow’s campaign provides some of the best 3D levels of the series, but it’s coupled with an outdated and unnecessary remaster. If only Sega would invest everything in the future.” Eurogamer 3/5
“Sonic X Shadow Generations is a strange package. On the one hand, Sonic Generations is a remaster of a great game from 2011 that now feels a little dated. On the other hand, Shadow Generations is the conclusion of a story that the franchise hasn’t cared about since 2006. As someone who was particularly into Sonic games during that early 2000’s, this collection feels like it speaks directly to me. But he also feels much like his protagonists – lost in a place outside of time and desperate to return to a better time. It’s a nice enough trip down memory lane, but the trip has all the speed you’d expect from games from that era.” GameSpot 6/10
