Since the release of the last DLC character for Super Smash Bros. Sora, it has not been known for a long time what Masahiro Sakurai is currently working on. Although he started his (quite successful) YouTube channel Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games over two years ago, he left us in the dark when it came to developing new games… until now!
On this very YouTube channel he revealed that he was currently working on a new title. As early as 2021, Masahiro Sakurai was apparently approached with a request to come up with a new game.
“I was asked to write a game proposal, which I completed in no time. “I’m sorry I can’t reveal more about this project, but assuming we manage to develop it, it should be announced sooner or later,” Sakurai revealed to IGN.
Of course, there is plenty of room for speculation. Super Smash Bros. fans can probably sit back down right now, though. In 2021, Sakurai also explained that the series would have to develop further without him, although he himself didn’t know what that would look like. After all, with the 89 fighters in the field, pretty much everything Nintendo has to offer is served. Pretty much every well-known character from the big own brands like Mario and Zelda is there, as well as the heroes from Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid and a few more.
So a new Smash title is possible for Sakurai, although unlikely. It is fairly certain that there will be a new Smash Bros. on Nintendo’s new, as yet unannounced Switch 2 console, but Sakurai’s involvement in it is still up in the air.

A new Kirby or Kid Icarus would also be conceivable – brands that Sakurai has already been responsible for in the past. At least it seems certain that the new game will also be a Nintendo exclusive, just like all of Sakurai’s other projects.
In addition, Sakurai is probably thinking about withdrawing from game development completely in the near future. In his video, he explained that he was unsure about his health in the long term. But he at least wants to pass on his knowledge – via the (as already mentioned, quite successful) YouTube channel.
