All console controls seemingly have the same elements, such as a directional pad, different buttons, a joystick, and triggers. These elements adapt to the design of each manufacturer, the functions they wish to add and the particularities.
Most of the time and conventionally, the joysticks are analog potentiometers and the others are different types of mechanical switches. But manufacturers are changing that, seeking to offer higher quality and higher precision solutions.
Precisely, in triggers and joysticks, where precision is very important, analog potentiometers are replaced by Hall effect sensors.
The use of these new sensors in the joysticks makes it possible to improve the detection of the position of the joystick on the controls. When you move the joystick, a small magnet integrated into its mechanism moves. The Hall sensor, located near the magnet, has the ability to detect changes in the magnetic field. It then translates this information into electrical signals that are sent to the console or computer. In this way, the direction and extent of movement can be determined with great precision.
Similar is changing the triggers, which also changes their analog operation to Hall sensors. This new mechanism allows for better typing precision. This even allows the trigger to have more than one action.
Hall effect sensors have greater durability than traditional potentiometers. In fact, they do not have moving parts that wear out with use. This is especially important for gamers who use joysticks a lot.
In addition, this type of sensors offers greater precision thanks to its sensitivity to magnetic changes. This means we have much smoother and more precise control.
Direct contact between moving parts and the sensor is eliminated. Since there is no contact, mechanical wear due to friction is significantly reduced. This allows for greater durability and, therefore, a longer useful life.
