Far and far

Far Horizons, in the language of Molière, is a 1992 film directed by Ron Howard that deals with themes such as immigration and the American dream. The story follows Joseph Donnelly (Tom Cruise), a young Irishman determined to escape his miserable life. After his father’s tragic death, Joseph sets off on a journey to America and takes his dreams of prosperity with him. On the way he meets Shannon Christie (Nicole Kidman), a young woman from a wealthy family whose father, a landowner, is brutal and authoritarian.

Their paths cross when Shannon runs away from home, eager to explore the world beyond wealth and family oppression. Together, Joseph and Shannon embark on the transatlantic journey to the United States, where they hope to build a new life for themselves. The film follows them on their search and confronts them with personal and social challenges, ranging from the fight for survival to the discovery of love.

Tom Cruise, a passionate lover of classic cinema, would have been delighted to work with Ron Howard on the 1992 western Far Horizons. This project not only gave him the opportunity to realize his Western dream, but also to reunite with his partner Nicole Kidman on screen. The film, a tribute to the great classics of the Western, benefited from a comfortable budget of 60 million dollars and careful preparation.

Reviews of Far Away

Far Horizons has a 50% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but that number is misleading. If you focus on the most reputable reviews, the consensus is much less favorable. Only a third of professional critics appreciated the film, and their praise remains mixed. Even if Cruise and Kidman’s performances are praised, the whole thing is considered unequal.

Distant Horizons delves into the lush landscapes immortalized by Mikael Saloman and offers magnificent photography. However, behind this lavish facade lies a shallow narrative. Tom Cruise’s clumsy imitation of the Irish accent mars the whole thing and is strangely reminiscent of an actor dressing up for a role that doesn’t suit him.

It must be admitted that “Distant Horizons” had some success among modern critics who love light entertainment.“This unpretentious film with the atmosphere of a Hollywood blockbuster will satisfy those who are looking for distraction without hectic.” An entertainment without surprises, but effective for passing the time.
