Xiaomi users are about to get a powerful software upgrade for free, although there is a small catch.
The tech giant has just announced the launch of HyperOS 2, a major overhaul of its operating system with improvements in performance, connectivity and AI.
HyperOS 2 will debut with the Xiaomi 15 and Xiaomi Pad 7 series, and starting in November, existing phones and tablets will also receive this free update.
The problem is that we don’t yet know when this firmware update will be rolled out globally, including the UK. For now, like the 15 series phones, it’s limited to China, but here’s what to expect when it arrives.
HyperOS 2 is Xiaomi’s latest version of its Android 15-based operating system, introducing three core innovations – HyperCore, HyperConnect and HyperAI – to make Xiaomi’s ecosystem faster, smarter and seamlessly interconnected.
HyperCore technology includes a custom scheduler that reduces CPU idle time by 19%, improving responsiveness and multitasking. Additionally, Dynamic Memory Management and Storage 2.0 improve application launch speeds and maintain consistent gaming performance during heavy use.
HyperConnect enables seamless device interaction within Xiaomi’s ecosystem, allowing users to transfer apps and data between devices, such as moving apps from a phone to a tablet.
Finally, HyperAI improves user experience with AI-powered features, such as depth effect animated lock screens and dynamic wallpapers. It also introduces real-time voice recognition, transcription during calls, and an AI-based synthesis tool.
Other AI features include the ability to convert sketches into detailed illustrations on Xiaomi tablets and real-time bilingual translation, making it easier to communicate between different languages.
HyperOS 2 even includes an AI-powered fraud detection system that can flag suspicious calls or videos.
As noted above, HyperOS 2 is expected to begin rolling out to Xiaomi’s flagships and other devices in November, with wider availability expected through early 2025.
The initial update will include the Xiaomi 14, Xiaomi Mix Fold 4 and Redmi K70/Xiaomi 14T series, as well as the Xiaomi Pad 6S Pro 12.4.
By December, the update will extend to devices such as Xiaomi 13 series, Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 series, Redmi K60/Xiaomi 13T series and other models. Other devices will receive the update in the first half of next year.
For now, this update schedule is exclusive to devices in China. For users in the UK and US, as mentioned earlier, Xiaomi is yet to announce a release schedule for the international version of HyperOS 2.
