There have been a lot of cool custom class mods released since Baldur’s Gate 3 came out, whether you want something fairly standard that isn’t included in the base game, or something completely weird from your own DnD The cauldron of merit. The latest game to launch is admittedly one of the weirder ones – allowing you to play as a duo by bringing along an understudy who rotates with you.
Yes, it’s a “don’t talk to me or my son again” deal, which is exactly the kind of thing you love to see from the BG3 modding community, and since patch 7 it’s looking more powerful than ever. Falling everywhere.

Anyway, this new mod is “The Duo Class” from modder Cheek, who also goes by the nickname Acorntail. Their creation allows you to choose a new class, allowing you to select one of three types of adventuring companions to accompany you on your adventures, each designed to reflect the classic fantasy archetypes of the warrior, mage, and thief.
With apprentices, lackeys, or squires, each fights by the name you desire, shares your turn in combat, and takes on the appearance of your character’s Dream Keeper, unless you use the following abilities: The mod gives you A feature called “Imprints” turns them into a copy of “one of more than 120 creatures in the world, each with unique bonus strategies.” So, basically a license to steal the souls of people you like, even the souls of people like the Emperor and Gotash.
As you level up this class, you’ll choose an “archetype” for your protagonist – a knight, a boss, and a spellcaster – all of which have similar abilities to their mini-me, or can be used to create a mini-me – Two punches with varying strengths. You know, a ranged mage with a handy warrior by his side, or a heavily armored knight with a sneaky sidekick who does all the cunning things they don’t want to get their hands dirty with.
“Comparing the duo to existing classes, you can think of it as a more complex version of the Beastmaster,” Chick writes. “However, instead of summoning an animal that grows as you level up, this summoned creature companion, but a humanoid, and more of your class features are devoted to developing the abilities and synergy of that summoned creature as well as your own as a pair.
They add that starting at third level, your duo partner can use tactics, powers that “give them passives or abilities to improve themselves, their adventuring partner, or both,” and work like a typical BG3 ability or spell . Some of these are “driven by tactical points, where a duo’s amount is equal to their duo level unless something changes that total.”
While your friends can conveniently see more dialogue options, they can’t actually talk to or access their inventory like proper companions due to adding their own set specialization to your existing pool of skill checks. However, the modder worked around this by making sure their inventories were available in camps, and “you can ‘loot’ them as if they were containers in the world,” which sounds interesting. There’s also a handy spell called “Transfer Gear” that lets you swap your gear with theirs, in case you get the jelly of a new sword they picked up.
All in all, this is a mod that looks like a lot of fun, especially for us wimps who like to keep as much body as possible between us and the giant brain trying to trap us.
