While waiting for an official release date, the producer of Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake explains Konami’s ambitions for this particularly closely watched return.
It’s been 20 years since the monumental Metal Gear Solid 3 was released. Konami has high hopes for its visually excellent remake running on Unreal Engine 5. However, the exercise requires a delicate balancing act between pleasing the original title’s veterans and attracting a new audience. How complex such a task is was explained by its producer Noriaki Okamura in a recent interview published in the 46th issue of Play magazine.
Konami quickly made it clear: Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake should be an extremely faithful recreation of the legendary original title. Whether it’s the progression, the story, or even the overall gameplay, this new edition shouldn’t confuse veterans too much. An approach relatively similar to that used by Bloober Team for Silent Hill 2 Remake in particular and, in short, the exact opposite of that used for FF7 Remake, among others.
However, its producer Noriaki Okamura doesn’t want Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake to get too “old” in its mechanics. “ Our main goal is to ensure that this remake offers a similar experience to the original game released 20 years ago, but without giving the impression that it is an outdated game. We didn’t want to make changes that were deemed unnecessary and would distort the essential work. At the same time, however, the remake must be at the level of modern games, especially when it comes to controls.
As hinted at in our Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake preview, these changes focus specifically on more ergonomic control schemes and a freer camera. As for the gameplay itself, from infiltration to shooting to melee combat, the remake should remain very faithful to the original work. Maybe too much for some. What really makes this reimagination stand out, however, is how absolutely beautiful it is recreated under Unreal Engine 5. However, we’ll have to wait and see what the overall experience looks like when it releases on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series at an as-yet-undetermined date.
