Nintendo released updated sales figures for its popular Nintendo Switch system this morning, announcing that the Switch has now sold over 146.04 million units worldwide since its launch in March 2017. While sales of the now-obsolete platform have slowed over the past five quarters, all eyes are on to the unveiling of the long-awaited successor by the Kyoto-based company.
“The Kyoto-based company cut its operating profit outlook by 10% to 360 billion yen ($2.4 billion) and said it now expects to sell just 12.5 million Switch units this fiscal year, down from previously forecast 13.5 million units. It’s unusual for gaming companies to lower their guidance ahead of the all-important year-end buying season.”
“Nintendo has overestimated the appeal of its 2024 software program, which has no real hits but a few extra games,” Tokyo-based analyst Serkan Toto said. “Looking at the software still coming out this fiscal year, I believe the adjusted forecast for hardware and software sales is still too high.”
