Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa has confirmed that Nintendo Switch 2 will be backward compatible with its predecessor. This means that all games from the original Switch will run smoothly on Switch 2, opening the door to tens of thousands of eShop titles.
The news came during a meeting on corporate management policies, where Furukawa assured that “Nintendo Switch software can also be played on the successor console.” It was also announced that its Nintendo Switch Online service will continue to be available on the new console. The latter is not surprising, considering that it is being implemented even outside of games such as Alarm and the new Nintendo Music.
Nintendo Switch 2 is backwards compatible: What does this mean?
Backwards compatibility is something that many Nintendo Switch fans wanted but didn’t know what to expect, especially considering the use of very specific cartridges. After all, the Switch itself was not backward compatible with Wii U games.

With confirmation that most Switch titles will work on the new console, Nintendo seems to be listening to fans and confirming that the successor will follow the Switch’s line in software and hardware, even if it doesn’t use cartridges. It is clear that the company has learned from its past mistakes.
However, we must keep in mind that backward compatibility is a very general term, and can come in any format. It can be through an emulator within the console, on the Internet with Nintendo Switch Online or with another alternative. We will have to wait to know the details better. But as more rumors emerge about the Switch 2, it’s looking more and more likely that it will be a hybrid system with improved performance, although to what extent remains to be seen.
What do you think of this? Are you happy about backwards compatibility or are you not interested at all?
