big changes on PS5 Pro? It’s a cold shower

Big, Cold, Pro, PS5, shower

Since its release, Elden Ring has been an unbeatable boss on consoles when it comes to performance. And the PS5 Pro, unfortunately, is no exception to this inexorable rule…

Unless you use a mod on PC to exceed the set 60 FPS limit, this has so far been the only platform that could run Elden Ring at this key value (and again, this depends on the specific configuration). FromSoftware’s title actually underperformed the PS5 and Xbox Series. With its much more robust spec sheet, there was hope that the PS5 Pro would finally be the console that could consistently keep gaming at 60 FPS. Unfortunately, this is not the case, as the expert analysts at Digital Foundry show.

Even the PS5 Pro is undermined by Elden Ring

Despite having a graphical and technical aspect slightly below other contemporary AAA games, Elden Ring has always had concerns about optimization. Despite a release in 2022 and the provision of numerous updates before and after the release of the Shadow of the World Tree DLC, it is difficult to achieve stable performance of the FromSoftware title, especially on consoles. Among the main causes: a huge open world with a very short loading time.

However, we might hope that the PS5 Pro will finally be the console that can stand up to Elden Ring and run it at a consistent 60 FPS. This is thanks to its improved GPU, the PSSR and especially the Game Boost, which improves the performance of thousands of games natively (albeit in a way that can also be improved, as we indicate in our test), as is the case here is. The title has not received the famous “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label, a sign of special optimization.

So it’s unfortunately a disappointment in this area, as Digital Foundry shows in the video below. Even in performance mode, the game sometimes hits 58 FPS, but almost never hits the untouchable 60 frames per second. Worse still, the variable refresh rate doesn’t seem to work below 48 FPS. However, this is the value that Elden Ring fluctuates in quality mode on PS5 Pro.

Digital Foundry is finally reporting strange results with the game’s ray tracing mode on PS5 Pro. Some passages in this mode turn into “ definitely better » than on PS5 and Xbox Series, but on others the trend is completely opposite. Even if playing Elden Ring on PS5 Pro remains in performance mode, experts say: “ the best experience on consoles “, unfortunately this is not the miracle solution we expected.
