Christopher Nolan planted an entire field of corn for Interstellar because he didn’t want to use CGI. And he still made money selling it

It has been 10 years since the premiere of Interstellar in movie theaters and Christopher Nolan’s film has already become an unforgettable work. The staging, the realism of its proposal, the palpable tension in every moment and the magnificent soundtrack by Hans Zimmer make up a very powerful combo.

Although the production has an obvious helping of CGI, the American director was determined not to resort to computer-generated effects during the sequences of corn fields. Joseph Cooper and his family live precisely thanks to the cultivation of this food, so it was necessary to show a large field covered in corn.

I never imagined I would have so much fun in a Call of Duty without hitting a single shot for almost an hour. Black Ops 6 has achieved it

Far from using CGI, Nolan wanted to really plant it and to do so he asked Zack Snyder about his experience in this matter while filming Man of Steel.

“I spent a lot of time with my designer in the early days talking about corn and what it would look like. Luckily, Zack [Snyder, el director] He had grown a lot of corn, so I asked him, ‘How much can you actually grow in practice?’ And they had made a couple hundred acres [para Man of Steel]so we investigated; We found a place where we wanted to build our house, very close to the mountains, on the outskirts of Calgary. In the end, we got a good harvest and even made money from it.”

The director did not reveal exactly the amount he earned from the sale of the corn, but he did say that it could be sold since “we don’t destroy enough“, despite the scenes in which the protagonists drive through it. In fact, these were actions with a certain risk. This is what those involved confessed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter:

Christopher Nolan: The stuntmen just drove straight into the corn, which I don’t recommend because you can’t really see anything. It’s terrifying. But we had all kinds of equipment. We had a specialist driving on top of the vehicle, and then Matthew [McConaughey] He was inside, pretending to drive, although he couldn’t really be seen.

Matthew McConaughey: I don’t know if I told you this, but I lived on the property. Not in the house [donde vive su personaje]but in a trailer near the house. He would come out when he knew we had closed production and have a great day. It was incredible to go 85 miles per hour without seeing anything in the middle of it all.

Jessica Chastain: I also got to drive a little in the movie. It was a lot of fun for me, that day.
